Johnson makes Splash at Blue-Grey All American BowlWhile the Jacksonville Jaguars were clinching a trip to the AFC Championship Game, a group of prep stars took the field for the 2018 Blue-Grey All American Bowl.
Josiah Johnson accounted for two touchdowns to lead Grey to a 31-28 win over Blue on Sunday. Johnson, a UMass signee, threw for a touchdown in the first quarter to give Grey the opening score and hauled in a touchdown on a trick play in the fourth. Grant Thompson threw it in from six yards out to Johnson, helping to tie the game at 28 with just over three minutes remaining. Johnson then engineered the game-winning drive after Blue's subsequent drive stalled. Full Article |
Bicho Steps In and Puts Up Impressive StatsKyle Bicho saw a little bit of playing time last year with the Portsmouth High School football team. Then a sophomore quarterback, he came in when the Patriots needed to throw.
“Last year, it was kind of tough coming in right off the bench, not warmed up and thrown into it, especially as a sophomore,” Bicho said. When Coyne graduated last spring, the starting quarterback job unquestionably belonged to Bicho. We needed Kyle to be the best he could be and he had an outstanding season,” Portsmouth coach Ryan Moniz said. “He took a lot of the responsibility on offense and he took that responsibility with great pride. He was throwing routes to the kids all summer, he was in the playbook all spring and summer, he works on his quarterback fundamentals almost daily. |
All-Stater Neary is a ThrowbackHe is a 21st century Chip Hilton. He plays for three teams at his hometown public high school in three unrelated sports — football, hockey and baseball. All of his teams compete at the top level the R.I. Interscholastic League offers and Neary excels in all three.
Last fall he was an All-State quarterback for the Cranston East football team that averaged 43 point per game in Division I with the majority of the Thunderbolt’s point-production coming as a result of Neary’s passing. In 12 games, he threw 38 touchdown passes. “I may never see another one like him,” veteran Cranston East football coach Tom Centore said about Neary. “I just love to compete. No matter what it is,” said Neary, who also has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average in an academic program weighted with honors courses. Full Article |

Andreozzi State Championship MVPPosted Dec. 6, 2015
CRANSTON — Once again, East Greenwich’s Nick Andreozzi proved that even in the game of football sometimes the size of the heart is more important than the size of the body. Andreozzi, the Avengers' 5-foot-7 senior quarterback, on Sunday at Cranston Stadium closed out a high school career in which he never let his diminutive stature stop him from becoming a star as he threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, leading East Greenwich to a 31-6 victory over Classical in the Division III Super Bowl. The victory gave East Greenwich its first state football title since 2006. It also closed out a 10-0 season against Division III competition for the Avengers and completed a career for Andreozzi in which he threw for 4,475 yards and 61 touchdowns in only two seasons as a starting quarterback. All Doubters Silenced by 2,500+ YardsAll doubts of a 5’6” quarterback and new defense were blown out the window when Andreozzi silenced crowds passing for over 2,000 yards and rushing for more than 550.
The team’s defense was also the most tenacious in the league limiting other teams to an average of 11.25 points per game. The team powered through the playoffs making it all the way to the D3 Rhode Island Super Bowl vs. Middletown. Full Article |

RowleyQB Pupil Named to All-American BowlWith just 400 athletes selected from across the country, Bentsen is one of 60 quarterbacks in the United State that received a nomination to the team. He is the first player from Rhode Island to receive that honor since Bishop Hendricken's Will Blackmon, who is currently playing for the Green Bay Packers, went to the All-American Bowl in 2002.
Despite the high-caliber athletes that the camp attracts, Bentsen was a celebrity among the signal callers, thanks to his selection to the All-American Bowl. He was recognized for his achievements during an orientation program on the first night of the camp and word quickly spread about Rhode Island 's All-American quarterback. "When I got to camp, all the coaches already knew about me," Bentsen said. "They told me that they were excited to meet me and looking forward to training me. That's when I realized what a big deal [the All-American Bowl] was. It just made me want to work even harder and make that final 90." Full Article |

Oullet is key for WestPaul Oullet is not a prototypical quarterback. He is more Doug Flutie than Joe Montana. But what he lacks in stature he makes up for in heart.
Oullet a senior Captain and quarterback of the Cranston West football team, is riding high as the Falcons come into their annual Thanksgiving Day rivalry game against Cranston East with a 9-1 record. With Oullet healthy and West's offense working at full speed the Falcons are perched to make a run at their first state championship in 20 years. With all the praise that has been showered on the Falcons team, Oullet seems to be the unsung hero of the top-ranked offense. |
Ivy League Graduate Out Thinks CoverageThere are plenty of things Kyle Rowley could be doing with his Ivy League education. But rather than working in an office and wearing a suit to work every day, the Brown University graduate prefers to put on pads. Working for a Fortune 500 company would give him nowhere near the joy he gets from being an Arena Football League quarterback for the Portland Thunder.
“I’m a firm believer in doing what you love,” Rowley says. “I played at Brown and got an Ivy League degree, but football was always my priority, even in college. Full Article |

Rowley Battles Injuries to Set Franchise Passing RecordIn those moments before Saturday’s game, Rowley appeared, for all the world, like a gladiator, transported from ancient Rome, to play football in Portland.
Then, when he stepped onto the field, Rowley played like a gladiator. Bruised, cut (and having torn his MCL completely in the first quarter). Rowley had the hell beaten out of him for over 60 minutes of action. But the 36-year-old quarterback somehow completed 22 of 29 passes for 235 yards and six touchdowns, with no interceptions. He also ran for a touchdown and led Portland to the best offensive performance in franchise history and a huge 72-48 win over the team that had just trade him, the Jacksonville Sharks. Full Article |
Rowley breaks All-Time Brown Passing Record in His First Home Start - 485 Yard PerformanceBrown's football team needed an exceptional effort to compete with ninth-ranked Rhode Island of the Atlantic 10 conference. In a game that saw six lead changes in the fourth quarter alone.
The Brown Football record book took a beating this weekend against the unbeaten Rams, with All-American wide receiver Chas Gessner (Hyattsville, MD) and senior quarterback Kyle Rowley coming away with single game Brown records. Rowley amassed a gaudy 485 yards of total offense, 474 coming through the air. Full Article |
Andreozzi Throws 3 TDs in 13 MinutesThe little guy with the big arm - and big heart - didn’t waste any time getting the East Greenwich football team off to a great start in its quest for the Division III state title. Nick Andreozzi, the Avengers 5-foot-7, senior quarterback, fired three touchdown passes in the first 14 minutes of play and East Greenwich never looked back en route to a 50-6 victory over Middletown, the defending Division III state champion, in the DIII opener for both teams Friday night.
Andreozzi threw for 2,100 yards last season but he and the Avenger dropped a 22-15 decision to Middletown in the Division III Super Bowl. Middletown is missing several of key members of that championship team this season, but East Greenwich still has Andreozzi, which definitely makes the Avengers the team to beat in the quest for the DIII state title. Romano & Andreozzi Share Passing Talent & TrainerIf you saw them standing side by side, you wouldn’t think Adam Romano and Nick Andreozzi have much in common.
Romano is 6 feet 4 inches and 200 pounds. Andreozzi is 5-6, maybe 5-7, and weighs 142 pounds. But when they step on a football field they share a striking similarity. They can both electrify a crowd with their passing. Most years the major attentions in Rhode Island high-school football are in Division I. But this season it’s a little different. A lot of people are taking notice of Romano trying to quarterback Moses Brown to a Division II state title, and Andreozzi hoping his arm can propel East Greenwich to the Division III crown.
